Hondo ISD Transitions Back to Application Requirement for Free and Reduced-Price School Meals:
Back to School and Back to Normal in the Cafeteria
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Congress authorized spending that allowed schools to serve free meals for all students. Those funds are not authorized to continue for the 2022-2023 school year. As a result, Hondo ISD must return to charging for school meals and offering free and reduced-price meals based on student eligibility at Hondo High School. McDowell, Woolls, and Meyer will remain CEP, meaning free breakfast and lunch are provided at no cost to the student. Starting on August 18 th , Hondo High School will begin distributing letters and applications to the households of the children in the district about eligibility benefits. Families who do not receive a letter stating that they are automatically approved for free or reduced meal prices are encouraged to complete the Application for Free and Reduced-Price School Meals, available at the high school, and return the completed form to the high school office or the Auxiliary Services office, 102 18th street.
The application will determine a child’s eligibility for free and reduced-price meals and may assist in the determination of eligibility for other state or federal benefits. Only one application needs to be completed per household. Schools will notify the household of the child’s eligibility. The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) administers school nutrition programs in Texas and offers an eligibility calculator at http://www.SquareMeals.org/ProgramEligibility.

Special Dietary Needs or Food Allergies
Records must be updated yearly for students with special dietary needs.
A medical statement must be on file in the Food& Nutrition Services offices for any students. Please find Exhibit B for the form or contact the campus nurse or the Food & Nutrition manager at any of the district campuses.
High School Meal Application
Schools participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and/or School Breakfast Program (SBP) (and that are not participating in a special provision program) are required to send a letter to parents/guardians that contains the Income Eligibility Guidelines for Determining Free and Reduced Price Benefits along with a Free and Reduced Price School Meal application form. Hondo High School Students will receive this information in their orientation packet (all other schools provide free meals). Applications will be available on this website for downloading. The application is available in two versions - English and Spanish.
Contact the Food & Nutrition Services Office at 830-426-7600 or visit us at the Food & Nutrition Services Office located at the Auxiliary Services Building at 102 18th Street in Hondo if you have any questions. We'll be happy to help you understand the process and answer any questions you may have regarding your child's eligibility.
Community Eligibility Provision (CEP)
Meyer Elementary, Woolls Intermediate and McDowell Middle School will be participating in the CEP School Meal Program for school year 2020-2021. Students attending these three campuses will receive one Free Breakfast and one Free Lunch daily, and will not be required to complete an application to receive meals free of charge. Schools qualifying to operate CEP serve breakfast and lunch to all children at no charge and eliminate the collection of meal applications for free, reduced-price, and paid student meals. This new approach reduces burdens for both families and school administrators and helps ensure that students receive nutritious meals.
